EU Bans New Gasoline, Diesel, and Hybrid Cars from 2035

Effective End of Combustion Engines

The European Union Parliament has voted to effectively ban the sale of new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE) from 2035 onwards. The vote, which passed with 340 votes in favor to 279 against, marks a significant turning point in the fight against climate change and air pollution.

No More New ICE Vehicles from 2035

As of 2035, only new vehicles that produce zero tailpipe emissions will be allowed to be sold in the EU. This includes electric vehicles (EVs), hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) that can travel a certain distance on electric power alone.

The ban on new ICE vehicles is part of a broader effort by the EU to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Transportation is a major source of GHG emissions, and the combustion of fossil fuels in ICE vehicles contributes significantly to air pollution, particularly in urban areas.

The transition to zero-emission vehicles is expected to have a number of benefits, including improved air quality, reduced GHG emissions, and lower operating costs for vehicle owners. It is also seen as a major step towards achieving the EU's goal of becoming climate neutral by 2050.
