Congress Passes Landmark Voting Rights Bill

Congress Passes Landmark Voting Rights Bill

Freedom to Vote Act Establishes National Standards

Washington, D.C. - March 8, 2023

The United States Congress has passed a landmark voting rights bill that would create a baseline national standard for voter access. The Freedom to Vote Act (FVA) passed the Senate by a vote of 52-48 on Tuesday and now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.

The FVA represents a significant step forward in the fight to protect and expand voting rights in the United States. The bill includes a number of provisions that would make it easier for people to register to vote, cast a ballot, and have their votes counted.

Specifically, the FVA would:

  • Create automatic voter registration for all eligible citizens
  • Establish same-day voter registration in all states
  • Expand early voting options
  • Make it easier to register to vote online
  • Restore voting rights for people with felony convictions
  • Ban partisan gerrymandering
  • Provide funding for election security

The passage of the FVA is a victory for voting rights advocates who have been fighting for years to make it easier for people to participate in the electoral process. The bill now faces an uncertain future in the House of Representatives, where Republicans are likely to oppose it.
