Game 7: The End of a Series

The Final Score

In the world of ice hockey, the Stanley Cup Final is the pinnacle of achievement. It is a seven-game series that pits the two best teams in the league against each other. In the history of the Stanley Cup Final, there have only been two games that have gone to overtime in Game 7. In both cases, the Red Wings would come out victorious, delivering heartbreak to their opponents.

1950: Pete Babando

The first Game 7 overtime winner was in the 1950 Stanley Cup Final. The Detroit Red Wings were facing off against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The game was tied 4-4 at the end of regulation, and it went into overtime. In the eighth minute of overtime, Pete Babando scored the game-winning goal, giving the Red Wings their fourth Stanley Cup championship in six years.

1954: Tony Leswick

The second Game 7 overtime winner came in the 1954 Stanley Cup Final. The Detroit Red Wings were once again facing off against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The game was tied 3-3 at the end of regulation, and it went into overtime. In the 12th minute of overtime, Tony Leswick scored the game-winning goal, giving the Red Wings their fifth Stanley Cup championship in eight years.

Aftermath

The last time that Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final needed overtime was in 1954. NHL president Clarence Campbell said that he would consider changing the rules if there was another overtime game in the Final. However, there has not been an overtime game in the Final since then.

The Bruins won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 39 years by becoming the first visiting team to have a shutout in Game 7 of the Final. It was a historic victory for the Bruins, and it ended a long drought for the city of Boston.
